Accidents Rise On Crowded And Lightly Traveled Roads
A New Jersey State Highway Department study of a 3.8 mile U.S. Route 22 section through Hillside Newark Essex County analyzed five years of data. It found crashes cluster when traffic is high and even more when traffic is low with intermediate volumes yielding fewer accidents. It notes cars cause more crashes than trucks relative to their share of traffic and warns drivers to stay alert at both high and low volumes.
