Hillside Public Schools Prepare for Opening and Orientation

Hillside Public Schools announce regular classes start September 8 under Superintendent Dr Wayne Brangy. Four new high school students must register September 28 with exams and schedules set for opening day. Orientation and faculty workshops planned for September 6 7 and 8 with teachers and principals meeting to discuss programs and methods.

Local Engineer Joins Esso Staff

Robert H. Paye, mechanical engineer from Hillside at 1087 Salemavert, has joined Esso Research and Engineering Company in the process research division. He holds a BA from Ohio University and an MS and PhD from the University of Illinois, with published work in ear dynamics. He served in the U S Army from 1944 to 1947, including 15 months in Hawaii.

Animal Rescued From Tree After Hurricane Storm

A large black dog stuck on a tree limb during the hurricane was roped and lowered to safety by a Good Samaritan from 128% Salen Avenue near Sneapameting in Salem Avenue. The dog’s owner, said to be at 124 Evergreen Avenue Newark, was contacted as the SPCA assisted in the rescue.

Grand Opening Promoted Amid Fire Damage and Rescue

A grand opening at 1148 Tiber venue for a Chinese American restaurant ends amid a fire that destroyed part of the building. A mother dropped her baby into an officer’s arms to ensure safety as smoke and flames forced evacuations. Firefighters contained the blaze by early evening with injuries minimal and widespread property damage including three stores and several apartments.

Recreation Day at Central Armands City Field

Recreation Day organized by the Hillside Recreation Commission occurs Thursday August 18 at Central Avenue field. The all day event starts with morning athletic and field activities, lunch at noon, an Arts and Crafts exhibit at 2:00 pm, followed by a pie eating contest at 2:30 pm and award presentations. The program ends at 3:00 pm with prizes for summer playground softball and volleyball leagues and crafts winners.

Harry Silverman of 1618 Schley Avenue was announced Tuesday as the new member of Hillside Planning Board by the township committee.
