Unico Will Honor Grant Receives Police Service Award

Deputy Chief Caeries Grant, head of the Detective Bureau, to receive the first annual Hillside Chapter Unico award for service above self. The award, announced by Leonard Barle, will be presented September 11 at a Unico meeting. Grant, Elizabeth native, joined the police in 1929 and the Detective Bureau in 1934.

Mannequin in Pool Reveals Woman's Body in Elizabeth

Police determined the body recovered from a backyard pool behind Rudolph Cammarota’s home on 2014 Salem Ave in Elizabeth is Miss Lillian M Houser 53 of 1025 North Broad St Elizabeth. The body was fully clothed with no marks and the death cause awaits toxicology reports. Houser had been despondent since her mother’s death about a year earlier and previously lived in Elizabeth for about 20 years.

Infant Born In Auto Here Dies

A baby girl delivered in a car en route to Elizabeth General Hospital died Friday night. The infant, born at 9:58 am in the rear seat of a Irvington couple’s car, had difficulty breathing and was resuscitated by two patrolmen before mother and child were taken to the hospital.

School Board votes for playground expansion and library fee hike

The board approves a $49,500 surplus use to enlarge the Hillside Ave school playground, while also raising public library charges including non resident cards and duplicate pay collection. A special election is set for September 25 to authorize the playground funding.

Pets Die In Blaze At Hollywood Pet Shop

Dozens of volunteers helped after a midweek fire destroyed the Hollywood Pet Shop at 1279 Liberty Ave. Many pets perished including a valued magpie owned by Anthony Katawick Jr. and dozens of birds and small animals. three firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation. The building damage was estimated at 10 to 15 thousand dollars.
