Residents seek curbs bus ban on Deremus Place

Residents on Deremus Place petitioned the Township Committee for curbs on both sides from Hillside Avenue to Route 22 and for a bus ban due to student safety. The request prompted drafting of an ordinance and possible assessments on property owners.

Resignation of Benjamin Berkowitz from Civil Rights Commission

The Township Committee accepted Benjamin Berkowitz’s resignation with regret after he announced he is moving to South Orange. He served on the Commission on Civil Rights and a replacement will be appointed later.

Mobile X-Ray Unit to Visit Hillside in September

Hillside Marine Arrives at Korea Air Base with First Marine Wing

Hillside, New Jersey native Marine Pfc Morey S. Haines, 21, joins the tactical air control squadron of Marine Air Control Group 2 at a forward air base in Korea. A Camp Lejeune veteran and Thomas Jefferson High School alumnus, he enlisted in May 1952 and is the son of Mr and Mrs Egbert L Haines of 253 Hollywood Avenue.

Clayton L. Heintz named Manager of Distribution at Cooper Alloy Foundry Co. in New Jersey. Pingry Summer School Ends Tomorrow After Growth

The twelfth Pingry Summer School session ends tomorrow with 446 students enrolled across departments. Director C Eliott Knoke notes strong growth on Pingry's new campus, praising the pool grounds and arts division while Reese Williams led athletics and Roy R Shrewsbury expanded remedial reading. One hundred ten locals from 90 communities attended the session approved by the State Department of Education.

Italian-Americans Plan For Columbus Day Dinner

The Hillside Italian-American Civic group announced plans for a Columbus Day dinner at the War Memorial Building on Liberty Avenue October 17. President Mark Janelli selected Joseph D Amiano as committee chairman with Dom Robertozzi as co chair and a full slate of subcommittees for tickets, entertainment, refreshments, decorations, seating, and more. Joe D Amiano also organized a program book and urged club cooperation. Co chairs Ben Scasserra and Frank Intrabartola were named for the ad book as the group eyes prominent sports figures for attendance.

Hillside Soldier Returns From Korea With 25th Infantry

Private First Class Kowalsky son of Mrs. Elizabeth Kowalsky of Hillside New Jersey returns to the United States after serving with the 25th Infantry Division in Korea. A Hillside High School graduate he joined the Army in October 1951 and arrived in Korea June after basic training at Camp Breckinridge Kentucky. He wears the Combat Infantryman Badge for exemplary duty under fire.

Lipsky Named to Dean List at Newark University College

Newark August 13 Rutgers evening students are cited on the Dean's List for Newark University College for the past year. The State University's list includes 345 honorees from Camden Dover Jersey City Newark New Brunswick and Paterson centers. Twelve earned perfect averages of 1.00 including Abraham Lipsky of 266 Conklin Avenue Hillside.

Hillside High School to Dedicate New Addition

A dedication program will observe the completion of Hillside High School’s new addition on Wednesday evening September 16. The project cost about $41,000,000 and will be opened for public inspection during the event led by the Board of Education and Mrs. William Raphael.

Goldhor Named Local Head For Red Feather Drive

Township committeeman Henry Goldhor of 319 Trinity Place was named Hillside unit chairman for this fall's Red Feather campaign, succeeding Mrs. John Major who led two record campaigns. Goldhor, Newark native and Rutgers Law School graduate, has served on the Hillside Board of Education and Township Committee and is active in Kiwanis and B'nai B'rith.
