Hillside residents report two youths ages 14 and 16 missing from home Saturday morning. Doris O Neill of 24 Looker St. tells police the boys left about 8:30 am and a teletype alert has been issued. Police continue to investigate with several neighborhood incidents noted.
Tributes rise for Rev Dr Edson Leech formerly of Franklin Memorial Methodist Church Hillside who died after seven years as pastor. He revived the congregation while writing pageants for holidays and inspired children before illness ended his ministry. Police praised Hillside department’s rapid response to a toy pistol incident, reflecting community thanks for local public safety.
A five car chain reaction crash slowed westbound Route 22 last Tuesday. Richard McGuiness, 38, of Newark slowed to turn into Route 231. Veronica Derco, 40, also slowed. Eddie Little, 29, of Pasdale, collided with or was pushed into Derco. Roy Schultz, 44, of Franklin struck Little, then Stewart Voight Jr., 38, North Brunswick, struck Schultz. No injuries were reported.
Fire Chief Carmen reported 23 calls over the weekend due to heavy rains flooding cellars and causing power shutdowns where wiring was involved. Pumping out cellars was avoided to protect equipment. two house fires and one car fire followed. A second floor kitchen fire occurred at Andrew Lazarack’s home, smoke damaged Helga Koelig’s apartment with four children present. A trash-container fire in a vacant two story dwelling on N Union Ave was set by children. A car fire at 27 Looker St, likely from a cigarette or spark, burned the front seat only.
Democratic candidate Joseph Ram charges opponent Henry Goldhor with unfitness and lack of honor over a Hillside Kiwanis fundraising matter. Ram alleges Goldhor’s conduct harmed the Kiwanis Club and crippled children by $5,000 in 1963, calling his actions scandalous and immoral.
Firemen sunday responded to a call in a store at 1299 Liberty Ave about flooding concerns. Smoke was found in the basement of Tiny's Bargain Store at 1301-1303 Liberty Ave due to a hot electric bulb igniting a plastic curtain. Damage limited to the curtain. Tobin's Appliances prepared to pump out water.
Hillside Kiwanis purchased two Yale Avenue parcels to build two family dwellings but later opted to sell at the offered price. Sam Manico of Hillside Management arranged the sale, with the club’s board approving. The sale to Hillside Management occurred September 30, 1963, closing April 30, 1964, then Hillside Management sold to Chaddon Homes, Inc. on March 2, 1964.
Democratic voters will choose between Joseph Ram and Henry Goldhor for Township Committee. Republican factiones spot Arno Witte as standard bearer with no contest. Eleven Democratic district contests feature incumbents and notable candidates across districts including Mancuso Seidens Salzman Menzay Diamond Hendler and Volturo Carrasia Blondette Mendy Marino Mc Manus Filce Golden Pisacatelli Bernstein De Lucca Tresenti. The one Republican race shows Hall versus Tygart for district leadership.

Vito Volturo campaign manager for Judge Henry Goldhor rebukes Joe Ram for questioning the judge’s health and candidacy. He accuses Ram of party-switching and urges Democrats to back Goldhor for Township Committee at the September 2 primary.
Flood waters inundated many streets Saturday as torrential rain swelled the Elizabeth River Park area. The Elizabethtown Red Cross aided Wesley and Kathryn Lesseter family at 407 Crongh Place after their 1-1/2 story home flooded. Pumps removed water from surrounding houses while gas and electric crews restored power. Police closed White Street and Boston Avenue when a street caved in under the rapid flow.
