Lehner Proposes Drug Program for Hillside

Gary Lehner, an independent candidate for Township Committeeman, unveils a five point plan to curb youth drug abuse in Hillside. The program seeks eight narcotics detectives, school education on drugs, expanded social and athletic programs, state aid for rehabilitation for about 15 known users, and a Citizens Narcotics Council. He cites 70 percent of youths 14 to 20 exposed to pot or similar narcotics and invites community contact. Competes For Teenage Title By Linda Gilbert's Sister

Miss Colleen Gilbert, a Hillside High sophomore, becomes one of fifteen finalists in the Miss Teenage America preliminaries at Palisades Park. Linda Gilbert won the contest four years earlier. Colleen, from fifty two entrants, advances to the August 28 semi finals with the national final set for August 30. The Gilbert girls are daughters of Mr and Mrs Robert Gilbert of 1500 Franklin Street.

The Hillside Ambulance Squad announced plans and awaits land approval to establish a new service location. Officials say the project aims to expand emergency response capacity and reduce response times for the community.

Two Arrested On Narcotics Count

Two men were arrested last Wednesday on narcotics charges. Mark Wechter, 21, of 530 Berlin Avenue Linden and Dennis Love, 23, of 1169 Harrison Avenue Roselle, were taken at 8 p.m. at 0124 Liberty Avenue. Several marijuana cigarettes were confiscated. Wechter also faced a charge of operating a motor vehicle with drugs in his possession.
