Hillside Westminster Builders Inc applied to the Zoning Board of Adjustment for a variance to construct a 41 unit garden apartment on Maple Avenue the same property targeted by the Board of Education for a land acquisition to enlarge Hillside Avenue School playground. After over three hours of testimony the board reserved decision.

Land dispute eyes 41-unit garden apartments on Maple Ave site

A plot of land 220 feet frontage on Maple Ave 160 feet deep narrows to 200 feet rear becomes focal in dispute between the Board of Education seeking to enlarge Hillside Avenue School playground and Westminster Builders Inc proposing the site for a 41-unit garden apartment. The Merkle Motors property at 1415 Maple Ave owned by Mayfair Supermarkets of Jersey City adjoins the current playground.

Airborne appoints Mrs Mary Bender sales division supervisor

W Cartlyn Rhodes president and general manager of Airborne Accessories Corp announced the appointment of Mrs Mary Bender as a supervisor in the sales division. Seek Site To Enlarge Play Area

Last Wednesday night the Board of Education gave preliminary approval to a fall referendum to use 69 500 of surplus capital to acquire property. Four of nine voted yes, two abstained, and one dissenting member questioned feasibility. The plan proposes 56 000 for land and former auto sales office building, 10 000 for grounds improvements and demolitions, and 3 500 for legal fees. Hillside Westminster Builders Inc reportedly offered 66 000 for the property.
