The April Crusade of the American Cancer Society in Hillside aims to reach a $5,000 goal as 100 volunteers distribute educational leaflets. Mrs. Robert Diamond and co-chair Mrs. Peggy Roche urge continued contributions after April, stressing ongoing cancer research and education.
Local opposition to moving Jersey Central passenger trains to Lehigh Valley tracks grows as legislators and officials weigh subsidies and PATH connections. Editorial notes that court action may fail and urges inventive local responses to prevent crossing elimination and town sacrifice.
Nearly 200 Hillside High School seniors joined the Hillside Industrial Association for a day of industry exposure. Ten business and secretarial students toured the National State Bank of Elizabeth and other firms, with Bristol-Myers leading the largest group.
Noble defeated Hall 328 to 208 for Republican Township Clerk in a light turnout. Acker man won Democratic Township Committee with 47 votes to Baron 36. Biertuempel and Mac Pherson led GOP delegates to the national convention with 389 and 323. Freeholders race totals show Wester 417 Rinaldo 472 Forrester 389, Wright 144 Daly 135 deGanahl 72. Olson results include Velinsky 140 Griffin 141 Moran 117 Tracy 505 Shanley 482. Dwyer 550 and Williams 355 were unopposed. Dischler led Township Clerk with 532.
Jack Schulman, president of the Hillside Democratic Club, accused the Republican Township Committee candidate of hoodwink ing voters at a April 15 meeting at Jane Fischer's home. He charged Republicans spread half truths about taxes and costs, defended the Democratic budget as sound, and cited abstentions by Joseph Ram and Anton Vit as political missteps.
Mayor Monroe Ackerman was named to the New Jersey Regional Advisory Board of the Anti Defamation League. Ackerman, former president of the Hillside B et B Chapter and co chair of the Constitutional Committee for the North Jersey District, was announced this week.
William Wheaton of Hillside is newly elected Governor of Livingston Moose Lodge No. 764. He will be installed with officers for 1964 65 at 43 47 Washington Avenue Irvington. Installing officers include Past Governors Edward C. Kastner and John G. Kracke Roth, with Women of the Moose Chapter No. 12 assisting.
A Hillside resident John S. Boyne and Pingry School students Robert G. Eisenhauer Jr. and Kenneth W. Wachter won National Merit scholarships in a nationwide competition. Boyne of 215 Clark Street attends Essex Catholic High School, and plans chemistry at Catholic University. Eisenhauer will major in English at Yale, while Wachter studies liberal arts at Harvard.
The Hillside Industrial Association will host its annual ladies night at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Winfield Scott Hotel in Elizabeth. Harvey W. Peace Jr. of the National State Bank Hillside Office serves as group president.
The Church of Christ the King announced a $600,000 building fund drive after a Holy Name Society meeting in the school hall. Archbishop Boland blessed the campaign workers. Officers to be elected May 13 include President John Dempsey and Secretary Frank Cangelosi.
