Rent control foes urge end of controls at Hillside hearing
About 100 residents attended a Hillside Township Committee hearing at Hillside Avenue School last Wednesday. The meeting saw strong opposition to extending rent controls beyond June while tenants urged continuation. James Delaney of the Property Owners of New Jersey argued war powers ended and 507 New Jersey towns have decontrolled rents. Tenant Edwin Fradkin cited board records showing 20 to 25 percent increases on two and four family properties, pressing for keeping controls. Others warned removal could raise vacancies or neglect, while property owner Milton Rubin and attorney Martin Gelber argued controls have outlived usefulness and that Hillside plus nearby areas have more housing in decontrolled zones.
