Clay Ably Against Abolition Abuses in Senate
In a February 7, 1839 Senate speech, Mr. Clay of Kentucky argues against abolition efforts touching the District of Columbia and Florida, warning that abolition agitation threatens Union peace. He classifies abolitionists into three groups and defends Congress’s restricted powers over slavery in DC and territories while urging careful constitutional interpretation and restraint.
