James W Taylor Elected Speaker In 22 Ballot House Vote
The House of Representatives on November 13 elected John W. Taylor of New York as speaker after the twenty second ballot. The body adjourned to table a Foot proposal to create a committee to ensure proper engrossing of bills. A joint committee with the Senate was formed to meet the president and report back.
