NC State University psychologist Dr Clyde Johnson links falling marriages and rising divorces to television. He notes 45015 marriages in 1971, down 1900 from 1970, and 20049 divorces, up 80 percent since 1965, with death of a partner still main dissolution cause. He argues entertainment often downplays marriage and features broken homes.

President Ford is due in Kings Mountain next Tuesday to mark a turning point in the American Revolution linked to sharpshooters who overcame Colonel Ferguson’s troops. Mayor John Henry Moss, credited with securing federal funding and Washington access, would be disappointed by any cancellation. The piece also notes October color changes, a Children’s Carousel Theatre season, a major cable TV extension by Carolinas Cable, and new scholarships in Randolph County tied to the Lillie Pearl Wood Fund, plus the passing of arts advocate Mrs. Bessie Alderman Gayle.
The piece recounts Daniel Ellsberg leaking sensitive documents to the New York Times three years before the Pentagon Papers, the FBI probe that briefly targeted him, and how missteps by officials allowed him to remain uncharged. It links his actions to Nixon's later downfall and the plumbers' response.
