The tropical storm moving northwest toward Pensacola Florida threatened the Alabama Mississippi and Florida coasts with hurricane warnings. By 8 am the center was about 75 miles southeast of Pensacola and storm winds were expected to strengthen as rescue ships operated in the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico to aid distressed vessels.
Two US entries Kepner and Van Orman led in distance to St Louis while Belgica and Denmark balloons stayed unreported. Belgica reportedly hit a tree near Paoli Indiana. Argentine pilot Eduardo Bradley suffered a crushed knee after landing in a tree near Fairbanks Indiana. An aide was injured and shocked. Official calculations will determine which US ship covered the greatest distance.
R L Boston a 60 year old farmer died after a hand to hand fight at his Mooresville area home with his son-in-law George Carriker 28 who was arrested without bond. Authorities say the weapon used included the butt of a large knife during the confrontation. Autopsy planned to determine exact cause.
In Goldsboro North Carolina today a wagon carrying tobacco was struck by a Norfolk and Southern Railway train at Miller's crossing. Lion Carraway and Ham son of Luther Ham were killed instantly. Luther Heath was hospitalized with severe injuries and not expected to survive. Fog obscured the crossing and a second track passed safely moments before.
Seven dangerous convicts from a North Carolina penitentiary are sought by Cuban secret police after reportedly entering Cuba soon after a sensational prison delivery on September 10. Photographs and descriptions of the men Buck Howell Woodrow Lewis Taft Bordens Alfonso Evans Floyd Cummings George Harris and Walter Bailey have been provided to authorities.
The weather bureau issued an advisory changing storm warnings to hurricane status by 9 a.m. on September 30. A tropical storm center was about 75 miles southeast of Pensacola, moving northwest at 10 to 12 mph. Indications show the center will cross the coast near Pensacola this afternoon with hurricane-force winds.

Magistrate L B Godshall issued a warrant for Shirley Styles on Union Sunday morning charging masquerading under a false name assault with a pistol and attempt to commit a capital crime.
Robert A. McPherson a young bank clerk was arrested on murder charges after a grand jury investigated the strangling death of his wife Virginia McPherson 23 found in her apartment. The case drew national attention as questions of suicide or murder spurred reopenings and accusations of a cover up by police officials.
The two day southern labor conference in Rock Hill adopted a compromise to let each state federation of labor and the United Textile Workers decide jointly when and how to organize among textile workers. The vote followed a heated exchange between Louis P. Marquardt and Francis J. Garmen. A committee was named to organize a second southern labor conference, the Southern Textile Organizing Council.
Rev. Charles P. Coble resigns after 16 years as pastor of the Presbyterian church. Congregation votes to concur with dissolution of the relationship and to seek a successor. Resignation effective at an early date. no immediate plans announced.
Vice President Curtis waives precedence for his sister Mrs Dollie Curtis Gann at the White House state dinner honoring Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald. Secretary Stimson says Lady Isabella Howard will be the ranking British lady instead. MacDonald asked that his daughter Isabel accompany him on the trip to visit President Hoover.
William B. Shearer the $25,000 observer for American shipbuilders at the 1927 Geneva naval talks testified that no American delegate wished the parley to fail. He said only one member tried to block an agreement by pushing a political clause and that he favored parity with Britain. He cited using naval intelligence data on Britain and Japan to inform the discussion, and rejected claims he tried to break up the conference.
Louisville report says Paul V. McNutt national commander urges continue cruiser program until real naval parity is reached with other powers. He supports parity by agreement over arms race and stresses Legion focus on veterans and national policy. In Louisville Kentucky the National American Legion begins its eleventh annual convention with about 50 000 delegates and visitors assembling at the Jefferson county armory. Commander Paul V McNutt of Indiana presides as Rabbi Lee J Levering delivers the invocation.
Helen Hicks of Inwood New York and Virginia Van Wie of Chicago tied for low with 79s at Oakland Hills country club. The national women's golf championship scoreboard showed a tight early contest as leading contenders posted three under par scores.
The senate enters the fourth week of tariff debate over whether the president may raise or lower rates on recommendation of the tariff commission. Hoover supporters push continuance while Democrats and independents seek withdrawal, with leaders predicting a possible vote tomorrow or Wednesday and a single decisive vote feared.
