Hong Kong editors report Communist China asking the United Nations to take effective measures to halt alleged bombing of Manchuria by American planes. The dispatch notes the claim from two pro Red newspapers in Hong Kong dated September 23.
A 19 year old Liberty South Carolina youth died and four companions from Liberty were seriously injured when the car they rode in left the road and plunged down a 150 foot embankment near Rosman North Carolina last night.
A total of 424 Tar Heel draftees were scheduled to trade civilian clothes for army uniforms today as the first induction in North Carolina. Through the week, 1,500 plus youths who passed pre induction exams will be inducted with 1,525 state quota but 1,840 called to report at three stations. Inductions run through Thursday in Raleigh and Friday in Charlotte with inductees sent to Fort Jackson South Carolina. Today’s reports show Fayetteville Harnett 29 Lenoir 58 Robeson 31 Raleigh Wake 53 Vance 14 Halifax 47 Franklin 25 Charlotte Mecklenburg 127 Wilkes 40.
An enormous smoke layer about 3 000 feet thick moved from the Great Lakes to the Seaboard and Ohio Valley as Canada forest fires burned gasping skies. Forecasters expected temperatures to return to autumn norms while cities like Cleveland and Pittsburgh played games under lights.
Washington Sept 25 James Marlow reports leaders of the Communist party will refuse to register within the 30 day window after the act became law. The government can compel registration after 30 days via a subversive activities board, with potential arrest if refused. The law also bars Communists from government work, defense plants, and illicit propaganda labeling.
New York reports Britain’s Ernest Bevin and other UN diplomats outline key policies in two U N Assembly sessions. Speakers include China Yugoslavia Philippines Pakistan Turkey Cuba Bolivia South Africa El Salvador with notes on US ideas for a UN corps and peace patron.
In St Paul Minnesota a federal narcotics agent was killed and another wounded during a Sunday morning opium raid at a downtown hotel. Four men were captured. A M Bangs aged 50 chief of the U S Narcotics bureau for the northwest area died of a heart shot. Joseph Winbeg 27 a narcotics agent wounded in the side. John Wong 50 is held in hospital after five wounds. Magnuson 3rd agent left to guard others.
New York reports on September 25 show the stock market resting near a 19 year high. Prices moved only a few cents while the average level stayed at the record reached Friday.
North Carolina weekend toll rises with nine dead in crashes and a gunshot death. Names include Katherine Seagroves of Bladenboro and Griffin Queen of Cleveland county. A Korean War dispatch reports U S Marines and South Korean forces advancing toward Duk Soo palace in Seoul.
Lt. James E. Alvatore of Red Bank New Jersey flies an unarmed plane to spot targets for artillery. He grimaced as if attacking and the enemy tank swerved into a bridge, toppled, and wrecked. Ground crew painted a tank on the fuselage to celebrate.
Admiral Forrest P. Sherman says the Korean war shows the need for balanced forces across the military. He urges an amphibious striking force within the naval service, modern carrier forces, and ready air and ground support for operations near allied troops and “highly mobile floating bases.”
London reports Commonwealth leaders addressing a six year development program aimed at countering Communism in Southeast Asia. Hugh Gaitskell welcomes delegations from Canada Australia Ceylon New Zealand India and Pakistan for a week of talks focusing on economic well being and rapid move from planning to practical results.
Gov. Herman Talmadge warned desegregation efforts would trigger riots and bloodshed in Georgia. He cited hostile mail and calls after a federal suit sought to end school segregation. He claimed overwhelming white support and minimal readiness of troops to enforce any court order. The suit was filed by over 200 Atlanta Negro residents against the city board of education and the school superintendent.
Waterbury report says a fire of undetermined origin swept the West Main Street Armour & Company meat packing plant early today. Acting manager John Daley estimated damage at 250,000 dollars.
Washington reports heavy September tax payments primarily from corporations. For the fiscal year run to September 21 the treasury shows receipts of 8.12 billion dollars versus 7.87 billion last year while outlays total 7.85 billion compared with 9.76 billion. Officials foresee a possible year end surplus despite Korea and defense costs.
Allied ground and air forces conducted a large scale practice battle at Senne Lager Germany as autumn maneuvers began.
