Man Arrested for Aiding Escape of Whisky Runner
J. W. Gable alias Harry Johnson alias Brownie and Andy Gump was arrested this morning on charges of aiding and abetting in violation of the prohibition law. He is held on a $500 bond as municipal court Monday morning prepares to hear the case. Detectives say he helped a whisky runner escape after 66 quarts of bottled in bond whisky were found in an automobile on Farris avenue near Headover street. Officers W C Agner and H D Stout seized the car and hid nearby. the suspect and another man drove away in a Oakland sport roadster. The Hupmobile involved is still missing, but Gable is believed responsible for the escape. Investigators suggest he may be wanted elsewhere, possibly by South Carolina authorities, as the Hupmobile carried a South Carolina plate while the seized car bore a District of Columbia tag.
