Preparatory to the Monday opening of the Gaston County murder trial of 16 textile mill strikers and strike leaders, attorneys discussed procedures to speed litigation. Sol. John G. Carpenter said he has strong hopes of shortening the trial as defense lawyers echoed the sentiment.
New York reports baseball great and Yankees manager Huggins critically ill at St. Vincent’s hospital after influenza and erysipelas infection. Doctors say he slept comfortably but fever rose to 105 degrees and a blood transfusion was given as his condition remained precarious.
Officials at American Glanzstoff and American Bemberg Textile Mills in Elizabethton Tenn announced that day and night shifts voted heavily against striking. At Glanzstoff 1670 opposed and 128 supported. at Bemberg 886 opposed and 68 supported. Ballots counted by a workers committee amid union charges denied.
Treasury officials say substantial tax reductions favored by President Hoover will be recommended to Congress in December with effect from March 15 next year. The move aims for a large cut, supported by expected continued prosperity and rising income tax receipts through the year.
Frederick P. Palen vice president of Newport News Shipbuilding testified before a Senate committee he was more responsible than anyone for employing William B. Thomas Ray Byrd prominent Asheville financier dies in car crash near Statesville. Funeral at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Asbury Memorial Methodist Church Beaverdam Road with Rev. O J Chandler and Rev A G Allen officiating. Burial in Lewis Memorial Cemetery. Byrd headed several financial firms and planned to visit Continental Mortgage Co. branch in Asheville. The wreck occurred near Kimwood seven miles east of Statesville on Highway 109. Floyd Wilson of Beeson Hardware reported the incident.
The market fell sharply in high priced industrial and public utility stocks with many shares slipping $5 to $25 from the day’s highs. Traders cited fears over a possible Bank of England rate hike and withdrawal of foreign funds, plus a report that steel mills were below last year’s levels and Alexander Legge’s testimony that a stock he owns heavily was overvalued.

Mrs S R Dull, arriving from Wilmington Delaware, lectured on drop biscuits Graham bread broiled steak and frozen fruit salad in a Frigidaire with Capus M Waynick introducing her. Prizes included a $100 Oriole gas range and various food and houseware gifts announced for attendees across the week.
The Evening News Dispatch in Wilmington was sold to the R W Page corporation, owners of the Wilmington Morning Star. The deal, announced in the Dispatch, involves officials J L Horne Jr and J E Thompson among others. Page also owns the Columbus Ledger and Bradenton Sun and recently sold the Durham Sun. The sale is effective immediately.
From Hankow to Ichang on Sept 19 Nationalist ships were shelled by General Chang Fah Kwhe forces. More than 50 men died and hundreds were wounded as 5 000 Nationalist troops and munitions fell into Ironside Cantonese hands. Two ships were captured and one allowed to return to Hankow.
President Hoover urged retention of the flexible tariff provisions in the pending tariff bill in a formal statement. He called the measure highly important for public justice and future protection of farmers and industries, arguing it allows remedy for isolated injustices and prevents onerous duties.
Colonel Charles A. Lindbergh returns to the United States from Paramaribo after establishing a new air mail link and a 7 000 mile round trip. He plans courtesy calls in South and Central America with a stop in Cristobal and a return to Miami around October 10.
Tobacco markets in the old North Carolina bright belt opened with heavy floors and brisk sales. Fuquay Varina in Wake county reported 150000 pounds sold by noon of 200000 offered, average price 18 cents. Henderson had about 250000 pounds on the floor, average 13.50 cents. Durham warehouses showed three quarters of a million pounds, two buyers competing to clear. Oxford warehouses offered about 500000 pounds at mid day, average 15.50 cents.
Hartford dispatch says Mrs. John H. Trumbull states ex President Calvin Coolidge gave John and Florence Trumbull a substantial wedding gift in the form of a check but would not reveal its amount.
A secret donor contributes 40,000 dollars to the University of North Carolina to build an auditorium housing an organ funded earlier with 30,000 dollars. The gift was announced at a trustees meeting in Raleigh attended by Governor Gardner and President Chase, with plans to adapt the Carnegie library for the hall and proceed with construction.
