Windred E. Bowles, a Denver newsstand operator, said a woman named Margaret Maes, 20, asked to try on a $600 ring and then refused to return it. Detectives investigated and Maes was hospitalized with suspected acute appendicitis. X-ray revealed she had swallowed the ring.
