Florida's second tropical storm in a week lingered off the mouth of Tampa Bay with gusts to 60 mph. Forecaster Grady Norton said the system halted and could resume movement as a high pressure area shifts, with potential crossing the state toward Daytona Beach.
President Truman appoints Gordon Gray of Winston-Salem North Carolina to be assistant secretary of the army Gray is head of Piedmont Publishing and publisher of the Winston Salem Journal and Twin City Sentinel He has served as a North Carolina state senator and held military rank in World War II with postings in Europe.
Winston-Salem reports that in the first half of 1947 North Carolina led the nation by contributing more tons of overseas relief goods. About 150 church leaders from 19 denominations attended the North Carolina council of churches 11th annual meeting in session, with Dean H. Satterwhite leading devotion.
Chancellor W C Jackson announced the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina would remain a leading supplier of teachers in the state. The 56th session began with 2,200 students enrolled.
Considerable clouds and strong winds across North and South Carolina. Occasional rain in coastal regions, cool temperatures, and a gradual warm up later in the week. In Robeson County the Superior Court set Thursday afternoon for the trial of Mrs. David Miller 24 charged with secret assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill her husband a Rowland merchant. Judge Burgwyn also scheduled sentence for Fred Wiggins 24 who pleaded guilty to a similar indictment after alleging he was hired to shoot Miller as he slept. Mrs. Miller collapsed outside the courthouse last Aug 13 and was said to be able to attend from Abdulachian Hall near Asheville for the Thursday proceeding.
Presidential hopeful Harold E. Stassen urged the United Nations to avert a third world war by framing the conflict as an ideological clash and shifting debate to economics. He said Americans seek freedom and would defend it anywhere, while Russia’s rulers fear an economic collapse of their system.
Asheville reporter notes Governor Cherry urging the 30th convention of the International Association of Governmental Labor Officials to balance authority between local and federal agencies. Dr Guy B Johnson research professor of sociology at the University of North Carolina will be cited tomorrow as the person who has accomplished the most for the advancement of the south during the past year. States represented include the Carolinas Alabama Florida Georgia Kentucky Louisiana Mississippi Tennessee Texas and Virginia. A plaque will be presented tonight to the North Carolina Catholic mother.
W Carey Dowd Jr former publisher of the Charlotte News and associates have purchased the News printing house a separate corporation in a new building a few blocks from the newspaper's offices in Charlotte.
North Carolinians woke to autumn cool as morning temperatures ran about 30 degrees below yesterday’s highs. The National Weather Service warned of a continued cool snap through Thursday morning as a north central air mass moves southeast across the region. Greensboro fell from 79 to 49 degrees, Charlotte from 86 to 53, Asheville from 71 to 51, and Wilmington from 85 to 59 as the day began.
The United States and Britain condemned Bulgaria's execution of Nikola Petkov, opposition leader to the communist backed government. Petkov lost his last appeal after the Aug 16 death sentence, despite U S and British appeals to the allied control commission and Moscow.
Two coast guard enlisted men injured by an explosion in the engine room of a patrol craft attached to the Fort Macon lifeboat station were reported improving today at a Morehead City hospital.

The U S army in Trieste demanded the return of First Lt. William Van Atten from East Orange New Jersey and two privates Pfc. Earl G. Hendrick Jr of Arlington Virginia and Pfc. Glen A. Myers of Edgeley North Dakota who were reportedly captured by Yugoslav forces while patrolling near the Trieste free territory border. Van Atten was ambushed between Goriza and Trieste. his driver was killed and Van Atten and a crew member were wounded.
The North Carolina local government commission sold Graham town water bonds totaling 15000 dollars at Graham to National Bank of Alamance with an average maturity of 94 years and an interest rate of 2.162 percent. Plymouth town sold 7500 dollars of six month revenue notes to Branch Banking and Trust Company of Wilson at 2.97 percent.
A dawn downpour in Thomasville dumped damage totaling several thousand dollars across downtown buildings. The heaviest loss was at Plant B of Thomasville Chair, with water a foot deep on lumber and furniture, while City Memorial hospital faced basement and oiler room flooding cutting off refrigeration and hot water, delaying services.
