FBI reports Michael Macejka age 43, a Greensboro jail escapee and bank robber, captured in Alexandria Virginia after being pulled from Southern Railway train No 48. He admitted identity, suffered two broken ribs and a cut hand during the escape and flight. He had seized a car with four teens and was driven toward Salisbury before arrest.

GM offers UAW new contract amid strike deadline
Detroit AP General Motors offered the UAW a three year contract with 19 specific improvements including three annual raises totaling at least 21 cents an hour. The first raise is retroactive to July 1. The offer adds 8 cents for skilled trades and 3 cents for cost of living allowances. UAW President Reuther pressured Chrysler talks and warned a major GM strike would hurt the economy. Chrysler refused comment. The UAW set a Sept. 30 strike deadline for GM unless an agreement is reached.
