In Buenos Aires the fallen dictator Juan D. Peron boarded a Paraguayan gunboat and received protection assurances. Rebels who ousted him demanded interception of the vessel en route to Paraguay, but the exile remained aboard the craft.
Reports say former Argentine leader Juan Peron may have fled to Paraguay aboard a gunboat after a four day revolt ends with a junta taking command in Buenos Aires. Rebel broadcasts urge a general strike and talks with rebels begin while the government seeks calm and order.
United States seeks to exclude Communist China as 10th General Assembly opens in New York. Diplomats expect Molotov to push Peiping bid while Lodge negotiates with Latin American bloc on China, Security Council race, and agenda. Chilean Jose Maza is seen as likely president.
Celanese Corp plant near Rock Hill S C remains operating as 800 strikers urged to return to work. The three day old general strike follows a prior four day walkout by spinning department workers over heavy workloads. The CIO Textile Workers Union says the strike is unauthorized and notes efforts to appoint an umpire. Payton cites ongoing workload grievance and similar strike at Narrows Virginia plant.
Chadbourn Hosiery Mills and Gotham Hosiery Co merge creating Chadbourn Gotham Inc with main offices in Charlotte. The new firm will have 3,000,000 common shares and 60,000 preferred shares authorized. Chadbourn converts Chadbourn common into three new shares. Gotham converts one for one. Chadbourn earlier acquired Shannon Hosiery and opened a plant in Concord.
Hurricane Ione moves out to sea northeast of Norfolk with warnings reduced from Block Island to Cape Hatteras. Forecasters say the storm remains dangerous but trends show most of New England should be out of danger if its course holds.
Untold millions in damage and at least five deaths were reported as Ione battered coastal North Carolina. New Bern suffered four fatalities, including Benny Sanders and Fred Alfred, with another white child drowning near Elizabethtown after a dam break. State Civil Defense warned losses could exceed prior storms Connie and Diane, as floods, destroyed power lines, impassable roads, and isolated towns spread across the coast.
In Belhaven North Carolina the town of 2500 faces severe weather as winds and rain flood streets and homes. Salvation Army served over 1000 meals while disaster headquarters operated from Pungo District Hospital. Guardsmen and patrol officers assisted as water rose along the Pungo River flooding about 11 square miles.
Paris reports a French cabinet decision to replace the Moroccan sultan with a three member regency for an indeterminate period. Premier Faure and Minister July will name the regents after Gen Hammon declined the post. Two regents were agreed as Si Bekkai and El Mokri with a third to be chosen.
A 12 man all white jury is seated in Sumner Mississippi to try Roy Bryant and J W Milam for the murder of 14 year old Emmett Till. Mose Wright will be called as the first witness and Mamie Bradley arrives to testify as state witness.
Eastern North Carolina farmers assess Ione damage after two prior storms this month. Crops including peanuts corn and cotton face heavy losses with harvest delays and potential spoilage. County agents warn sweet potatoes and tobacco also suffer while overall losses may reach millions.
Sheriff Malcolm McLeod says a 40 year old Pembroke man identified as the driver of a car that rammed a truck Friday will face murder charges. June Locklear of Pembroke is free on $2,000 bond. His hearing is set tomorrow in Maxton Recorder's Court. Victim William C. Carmichael, 18, of Maxton, was killed in Pembroke. the truck carried 11 passengers.
Eastern North Carolina faces major road repairs after a third hurricane in two months. Four two man teams from the U S Bureau of Public Roads in Raleigh survey damage while State Highway Engineer W H Rogers Jr and Chairman A H Graham assess Morehead City New Bern and area highways. Roads including U S 17 70 264 and N C 101 are reported closed due to high water with heavier damage anticipated.
