The West Indian hurricane battered Florida's south and west coasts then moved into the Gulf of Mexico isolating Miami and West Palm Beach. Widespread damage followed with 3 feet of flooding in Miami Beach, power and telegraph outages, wrecked docks, and disrupted rail and shipping along the coast.
The battered half of a schooner bearing the name Carson of Nassau N P was found beached on Talbot Island two and a half miles off Mayport. There were no signs of life aboard.
Florence Sept 18 Edmund D Bigham faces a life trial in Horry county for a 1921 family massacre that killed five relatives. Prosecutors seek motive of inheriting the Bigham estate while Bigham insists his brother Smiley committed the killings and suicide. The case, long delayed, could end with a death sentence if a verdict is reached.
President Coolidge and Mrs. Coolidge rode a special train through New York stations from the Adirondacks to the Mohawk and Hudson valleys. Fans lined platforms as he and Mrs. Coolidge acknowledged greetings with hats raised. The couple, with dogs Rob Roy and Prudence Prim, waved to schoolchildren and travelers aboard.
Tim Crook an 80 year old Civil War veteran from the Hill country near Minersville Nebraska asks District Judge Begley to allow a guilty plea for stealing chickens during the war. The judge smiles and advises him to forget about it noting wartime hardship and fair play debates.
Dr A B Ramsey a prominent Tennessee physician was shot three times with a shotgun as he sat in his car in front of a garage in McMinnville. A J Overall a local insurance agent was arrested for murder claiming Ramsey had invaded his home. Overall said he then attempted to shoot his wife but the gun failed and Mrs Overall was struck on the head.
The North Carolina committee on the feeble minded issues seven recommendations to Gov McLean, including possible sterilization in specific cases with approval from state corrective institutions heads. Proposals urge Caswell Training School priority for burdensome cases, modern cost finding, parole and discharge goals, and long term building plans to 25 years for Caswell with capacity target of 2090.
Meager advices from the east coast of Florida report a 100 mile gale washing three feet of water over the Miami island and six feet over the Miami Beach causeway. Docks wrecked, several structures unroofed, and communications crippled from Miami to Fort Pierce. Western Union lines were restored to Miami Beach via Key West but no commercial service returned. A separate report from Los Angeles states evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson faces arrest Monday on conspiracy charges if health permits.
Raleigh Sept 18 AP Highway Commissioner Frank Page was authorized by the council of state and the council of buildings and grounds to finish and furnish the fourth and fifth floors of the highway building known as the revenue building. Expenditure not to exceed 40000 dollars was approved. Over 500000 dollars has already been spent on the structure, Governor McLean stated.
In Mexico City on September 18 AP reports dead prisoners strung along the road to Cuernavaca near where American tourist Jacob Rosenthal was kidnapped and murdered. Six bandits were executed and seven suspects killed resisting troops as authorities vow ruthless retaliation. Rosenthal's body will be sent to New York via Joseph and Lucian Ruff.
Raleigh Sept 18 Governor McLean announced the state historical commission is authorized to publish the official letters and papers of former Governor Cameron Morrison under public records. The manuscript is ready and publication will cost about 1009 dollars.
Charlotte authorities win a Mecklenburg court ruling dissolving an order that barred the Reverend Bishop C. M. Grace from leading services at The House of Worship. Grace still held afternoon services and announced plans to continue indefinitely as officials say no law to eject him.
Enterprise Bureau Raleigh Sept 18 Serious plans to open state quarries operated by prison labor to supply rock for roads and buildings. Governor McLean supports year round prison work while the highway commission would benefit from reduced costs and steady rock supply.
A. R. Yelverton of High Point was seriously injured when his car overturned in a sharp curve near Smithfield North Carolina. He was pinned beneath the vehicle and three Wake Forest students found him and transported him to a local hospital. Doctors fear a fractured skull.
High Point real estate board members warn buyers about wild cat operators painting rosy pictures for land purchases. The meeting at the Country Club discussed state wide schemes, welcomed three new members, and announced the Greensboro association meeting scheduled for October 7 and 8.
Mrs. W. H. Vredenburg described a brave effort to save her husband from flames in a Wilmington cafe fire. She dragged him through smoke toward a window, but he died, and she later died from burns after rescue by firemen.
Expenses of North Carolina’s prison for the year ended June 30 1925 ran $82 366 70 over receipts. Total outlay was 510 851 91 with 428 515 21 paid into the treasury according to the state auditor’s office.

Relief may come if Marshal Sun Shuan Fang can move troops 150 miles along the Yangtze and link with Wu Pei Fu, defender of Wu Chang.
Governor McLean accepted an invitation to introduce Senator Heflin of Alabama who is slated to speak at the Rocky Mount fair on Wednesday October 6 at 2 PM. The invitation came from a seven member Rocky Mount citizens committee.
Dr. Theodore A. Hargrove a leading Canton dentist for 25 years shot himself at his home around noon today. He was 52 and had recently been under observation for a suspected mental derangement according to police records.
