Iowa Senator backs limited nuclear test ban treaty

Senator Jack Miller of Iowa announced support for the limited nuclear test ban treaty becoming the 80th senator to approve. The pact requires a two thirds Senate vote for ratification with division shown by an AP survey that 13 oppose and seven are uncommitted. The final vote may be delayed to next week as debate continues amid criticism.

Winged Asset test flight fails to recover in Atlantic

The first American winged payload test in Project Asset launched from Cape Canaveral aboard a Thor rocket reaching 35 miles. It streaked toward the Atlantic with a 9000 mph reentry but recovery vessels could not locate the craft hours after splashdown and feared it may have sunk.

Khrushchev lashes Soviet farmers over poor harvests in Volgograd

Soviet Premier Khrushchev berated farmers for inefficiency and accused bureaucrats of exporting fertilizer as he urged higher mineral fertilizer production. He contrasted Soviet needs with a Canada deal to buy wheat and noted shortages and underuse of fertilizer in state farms.

Bandit Robs Raleigh Bank Branch at Ridgewood Center

A tall dark skinned robber held up the Ridgewood branch of First Citizens Bank & Trust Co in Raleigh around 11 15 a m. He brandished a gun and escaped with about 11000. The Highway Patrol described the suspect as 6 feet tall 215 pounds wearing a beige coat red sunglasses and a cap. Bank manager Loyce White said officers arrived after the robbery located at Ridgewood Shopping Center near Meredith College. The FBI confirmed the robber told two female tellers he was drunk but could still blow their heads off.

Beaumont and Orange County faced widespread flooding as Cindy's surge sent 3 000 Texans fleeing homes and 10 000 warned to evacuate in Louisiana. Rescue trucks evacuated 325 people from Beaumont's West Side while Air Force trucks moved six families from Green Acres and Fannett. Tragic Salinas Crash Kills 28 Field Workers

A speeding freight train struck a makeshift bus carrying Mexican field workers near Chualar eight miles south of Salinas, killing 28 and injuring 35. Eyewitness Tony Vasquez described bodies scattered along the track as ambulances ferried victims to Salinas hospitals. Three Children Die In Blaze In Georgetown

A wind blew kerosene lamp over in a frame house in Georgetown South Carolina Tuesday igniting wallpaper and papers. Three Negro children Barbara Mike and Kenneth Simmons died in the blaze. Their 10 year old brother had put them to bed and slept through the fire. Firemen found the children in a bedroom corner.

Doctors puzzled by mysterious epidemic killer of babies

An AP report details a suspected neonatal epidemic striking infants in Vermont and Atlanta last year. Vermont saw three to four babies born with spina bifida in six weeks, far above the normal rate. researchers traced cases across the state and sent surveys to doctors. In Atlanta, US Public Health Service investigators found an outbreak of similar cases, numbering sixteen, suggesting a wider, unexplained threat to newborns.
