Thousands Rally North Carolina Democrats in High Point

Norfolk Storm Floods Streets and Coast Guard Stands By

Norfolk on September 18 reported rising tides and six foot water on streets as winds eased to 36 mph. Eastern Air Lines said a coastal storm gave a south bound flight extra speed, shaving two hours 18 minutes from schedule. The Miami arrival at 5 37 A M marked a six hour 12 minute trip from New York, with an earlier New York to Raleigh leg in two hours five minutes. Tail wind from the north aided the fast run.

In Salinas California women lettuce workers jeered police facing tear gas and riot sticks as about 1,200 workers including 900 women walked out in a two week old strike. Union official A D Dogs cited several women treated for fear and gas effects while one striker Rose Lloyd was hospitalized for bruises from a street clash. Federal and state mediation efforts offered hope for peace as Sheriff Carl Abbott led a raid on union headquarters with no weapons found.
