In New Orleans AP reports giant Gulf of Mexico finds by Shell Oil Co and Amoco backed by Shell partnerships. Two semisubmersible rigs drill a 9,770-foot confirmation well in 1,050 feet of water, with Placid Oil planning a 1,750-foot campaign. Deep water prospects boost Gulf prospects despite high costs and future pipeline connections not expected for four to five years.
