Readers are invited to see five Chinese chestnut trees from Pennsylvania loaded with burrs and dropping chestnuts. The trees are in Penny Road beside Parkwood Baptist Church.
The labor union strikers at Ford Motor Co. do not qualify for unemployment benefits because such compensation requires no work availability. The United Auto Workers report a sizable fund to support striking members for a long period, while strikers also rely on savings and credit to cover expenses.
Doria, once a hurricane, drops to tropical storm with 40 mph winds as it tracks the Carolina coast. It made landfall near Currituck Sound, killing one and leaving two missing. Evacuations were prompted. tides rose modestly and most Red Cross shelters closed except Wallops Island VA.
Hurri cane Doria effects expected in the Piedmont with northerly winds. Forecast calls for cloudy skies and mild temperatures with possible light showers today. Tomorrow should be partly cloudy with continued mild warmth. Lows near 65, highs in the upper 70s, tonight near 60. Rain chances about 10 percent.
Gov. Moore announced Wayne Corpening of Winston-Salem and Raleigh will become director of the North Carolina Department of Administration on Oct 1, succeeding Edward L. Rankin Jr. Rankin resigns Sept 30 to lead the North Carolina Citizens Association. Corpening has led economic development efforts since 1966 and will head the administration with expanded coordination across state agencies.
United Nations Secretary General U Thant said Hanoi’s allies are increasing military aid to North Vietnam including air crews and engineers. He urged a halt to U S bombing as the first step to peace and said negotiations could follow in three to four weeks if conditions change.
A combined U.S. Army and Navy river force defeated a hard core Viet Cong battalion after a four day running attack in the Mekong Delta. The guerrillas left 204 dead and 15 Americans were killed with 125 wounded. The operation cost the Navy its worst combat losses of the war.
Mamie Vail, 64, was hospitalized after an armed robbery at Davis Electric Co on English Road. A Black woman, about 30 to 35, five feet tall, wearing a dark blouse, forced her to open the safe and beat her with a bottle before fleeing with about $100 from the cash drawer. Police describe the assailant and continue the investigation.
Secretary of Defense McNamara disclosed to Pentagon and congressional officials Johnsons plan to deploy a thin antimissile system to guard against nuclear attack from Red China. The word was given at a secret Friday meeting with a secrecy pledge. An official announcement was expected Monday in San Francisco, though some urged potential delay.
Barry Goldwater says Johnson follows his Vietnam policies, questions McNamara as defense chief, and laments Rockefeller and Scranton splitting votes. He notes a 80 percent Johnson poll at the 1964 nominating convention and cites a controversial Scranton letter as a factor in his losing margin. The Arizona Republic ran the Q A interview.
