UNC Seeks 10.8 Million for Salaries And Services

The Consolidated University of North Carolina asked a total of 10.762 million dollars for the next biennium to raise salaries and expand services. President Friday cited salary disparities with similar institutions as a top priority while chancellors outlined 4.989 million for raises and 5.313 million for program improvements. The State Board and budget commission heard requests labeled A and B during hearings on the 1963-65 budgets.

Rusk Questioned On Cuban Issue

Secretary of State Dean Rusk testified before joint Senate Foreign Relations and Armed Services committees as they draft a congressional stand on the Soviet aided Cuban military buildup. Republicans urged strong action including possible troop use to prevent a Cuban Red beachhead, while Mansfield proposed a Congress on record supporting the President in any move.

Derailment Piles 33 Freight Cars Near Morrisville

A Southern Railway freight train derailed north of Morrisville North Carolina piling about 33 cars in a cut near U S Route 70. No injuries reported though communications were knocked out. Tanks cars containing butane gas were in the wreck but no fire occurred.

Nine New Astronauts To Join Space Team

The United States adds nine new astronauts to its space program, bringing the total to 16. The group includes two civilians Neil Armstrong and Elliott Lee Jr., four Air Force officers, and three Navy officers, all with test pilot experience, selected after six months of evaluations from 253 applicants.

Prisoner Killed In Wake Jail

Ray Blanchard a 34 year old prisoner serving a one year term was killed in the Wake County Jail in what authorities call an altercation with other inmates. Jailer A J Proescher said detectives are investigating and there was no riot. Blanchard who worked around the jail was due for release Sept 26.

Missing Marine children Spark Wide search near Camp Lejeune

A Marine search party was trimmed to 250 men as hope faded for the recovery of Diane Yoli seven, and her half brother Mark Yoli three, missing since Thursday night near Midway Park housing. Officers said they likely wandered into thick woods and swamp around Camp Lejeune with foul play ruled out.

Robbers Lock Grocer In Cooler Then Take $1600

Two armed men locked grocer Robert Maready in the meat refrigerator at High School Grocery in Wallace North Carolina and fled with about $1600 from a cash box. Maready described one robber as red haired and the other black haired. a salesman aided after door release. Local and state police and the SBI are investigating. amount recovered may total 1600 to 1700 dollars.

Man Shot Wife and Baby Found Dead Near Waynesville

In Ninevah near Waynesville North Carolina a husband was shot in his sleep and his wife and eight month old son were found drowned tied with a rope. Diane Fulbright survived unharmed as investigators label the scene murder and death by own action.
