Virginia Legislature Divided Over School Integration Approaches
Virginia's 30 day special session opens its fourth week with lawmakers split between Gov. Stanley's no integration plan and a local option on integration. The House Appropriations Committee backed a local option amendment to the fund withholding bill, while administration leaders seek to maintain total segregation. The clash centers on whether to allow localities to choose assignment plans and potential state court appeals. The session nears its end with possible action on a school program before September 5.
