Explosive Laden Freight Train Derails Near Longview
A freight train carrying gasoline and explosives derailed about a mile west of Longview Texas on September 16. No explosion or injuries occurred as 22 cars left the track, 18 of which carried dangerous loads. Work crews cleared the Texas and Pacific line, cause undetermined, with the rear portion of the 70 car train and the leading 48 cars continuing to move after the incident.

A 17-year-old Swansboro high school fullback Robert Pate suffered a broken neck in a game against New Bern. He was rendered almost completely paralyzed as a New Bern runner fell on his neck, crushing the sixth vertebra. Doctors warned his injury could prove fatal. New Bern won 77 to 0.

Road bond sales and road list plans announced for September
