Witnesses testified that several defendants were away from the mob scene while the inquiry into September 9 violence continued. Judge Shaw also disqualified Ben Wells as a witness for not believing in God, and eight labor organizers were freed in related proceedings in Charlotte.
Reports from Jerusalem Sept 16 describe a new outbreak at Hattin near the Sea of Galilee where raiding Bedouin tribesmen suffered 16 dead and many wounded before British patrols dispersed them. William Campbell Phillips, 37, a Vancouver machinist, killed his daughter Joan 10 and son Eric 4 with a hatchet, slashed his wife’s head, set his house afire and killed himself by cutting his throat. The wife was rushed to a hospital in critical condition.
Donald B. MacMillan described the Bowdoin’s Aug 18 escape from heavy ice near Loksland Point as the closest shave of his 21 years of Arctic exploration. C D Waggoner president of the closed Bank of Telluride Colo remains in Laramie county jail after transfer from Newcastle as New York authorities prepare an indictment on a 500000 manipulation of funds involving six banks. US Attorney A D Walton said action on removal to New York will wait for the indictment and possible bench warrant. Crump indicated insanity as the defense plan for the coming trial.
London society and press congratulate Lady Diana Duff Cooper after the birth of her son. The actress and hostess, long noted for her beauty and wit, is married to Alfred Duff Cooper for ten years and has historical ties to London high society.
The Associated Press began delivering world wide telegraphic news to The Enterprise using 60 word per minute telegraph typewriters. The new printers replace slower machines, allowing a single operator in the relay office to start the circuit daily and run it continuously from opening to closing time.
Caroline Drew, held in connection with the discovery of liquor in her rooms at communists headquarters, was released on a cash bond of $100 in Gastonia. Greens boro Daily News reported W. Tom Best posted the bond in city court. Liston M. Oak’s concealed weapon case was continued to tomorrow at 8 am. Oak is on $500 bond supplied by the International Labor Defense. Drew was arrested in Charlotte and accompanied to Gastonia by Herbert Gulley and J. Frank Flowers.
In Work North Dakota a filling station attendant Ernest Roe was shot by customer Fred J. Pfafflin who complained after four gallons were pumped instead of three. Sheriff Palmer said Pfafflin fired at Roe last night and Pfafflin was arrested on murder charges.
Three people were killed and over twenty injured as sewer explosions rocked Water street Newburg New York near noon. Storefronts collapsed along Water street between Main and Second streets and a ladies furnishing store caught fire after an explosion inside the building.
NEW BERN Sept 16 Edward Cannon son of Bishop Cannon of the Methodist Episcopal Church South will marry Miss Elizabeth Roberts at noon tomorrow at the bride’s home. Bishop Cannon will perform the ceremony in a quiet family wedding with a few out of town guests. The romance began when both couples were students at Duke University and members of the 1928 graduation class.
At Lake Hickory North Carolina on September 15 B B Hall superintendent of the Hickory Chair Company Wallace Veach superintendent of Statesville Furniture Company and W S Robinson clerk of deeds of Catawba county drowned after their motorboat capsized. Searchers recovered Veach at 10 pm and Hall at 11 pm with Hall believed to have tried to rescue his companions. A 15 man diving team retrieved the bodies from the lake bed after the cabin boat overturned.
London reports King George recovering with a literary diet of detective tales as his health improves after a winter illness. At Sandringham he cannot digest solid books yet and serious World War publications are set aside for later. Thrillers remain his favored reading fare.
The ZMC-2, the navy's all metal dirigible, lifted off just before 11 a.m. for a Flight over New York City. Captain Kepner commanded with Lieutenant Dugan as assistant pilot and six civilian and navy passengers aboard.
British and French positions in the Rhineland are clarified. Officials say no foundation for a Shaw summons of Lieutenant General Sir William Thwaites to London over Wiesbaden occupation plans. Evacuation of Wiesbaden to begin late September remains scheduled.
A board of inquiry met in St. Catherines to determine the cause of the Merriton air plane crash that killed six people last Saturday. Pilot Frank Bradfield, a World War veteran with about 3,000 flying hours, led the flight for five first time passengers from Homer airport.
