Government probes skyscraper wind effects in Washington
The United States Bureau of Standards leads an official investigation into how high rises respond to strong winds. A five foot aluminum Empire State Building model will be tested in a 10 foot wind tunnel, with pressure readings at 35th, 55th and 75th floors to compare with full scale measurements.

Wind tests probe Empire State building safety limits
U S government scientists study how wind pressure affects tall structures. Using a vertical collimator at the sixth floor and 85th floor sighting, they measure sway and compare to weather data. The work examines girders, beams, and the feasibility of using skyscrapers as airship masts amid debates on height and rigidity.
