A Viet Cong demolition squad raided a motor pool six miles north of Saigon, destroyed the admin building and 52 trucks, with several casualties reported among civilians and military. U.S. officials estimated damage at $1 million and noted ongoing air strikes and helicopter operations in Vietnam.
Edward J. McCormack won the Democratic nomination for Massachusetts governor defeating Kenneth P. O'Donnell. In Minnesota Karl F. Rolvaag failed to gain renomination by his own party, setting up a November challenge for a second term. Joseph W. Martin lost the Massachusetts Republican bid to Margaret Heckler. Other states held primaries with races for governors, Senate seats and House seats amid national issues.
Senator Edward Kennedy congratulates Edward J. McCormack as the Democratic governor nominee in Massachusetts. Kennedy had previously defeated McCormack for the Senate nomination, and he pledged support for McCormack in the November election.
Republicans outline a reduced budget aiming to show President Johnson can cut federal spending by 4.7 billion instead of 3 billion. Senate GOP Leader Dirksen said the Policy Coordinating Committee will unveil a detailed plan at an October 3 meeting. Separate reports show households face higher costs as wholesale food prices rose 1.3 percent in August and the wholesale price index increased four tenths of 1 percent.
Gemini 11 astronauts Charles Conrad Jr and Gordon Cooper extended a tether from the Agena satellite and soared to about 850 miles above Earth, setting a new peak. They then lowered back to an orbit of roughly 180 to 190 miles as the mission continued.
Senate faces cloture vote on the civil rights bill with Everett Dirksen staunchly opposing the measure. He vows no change in his position and plans to deliver a pre vote speech. The administration needs Dirksen support for the two thirds requirement.
Moon mission crews will undergo strict three week quarantine upon return to prevent lunar contaminants. The Lunar Receiving Laboratory at Houston's Manned Spacecraft Center, costing 8.1 million dollars, is under construction and due to finish by late next year to support a possible 1968 first lunar voyage.
More than 300 state officers in riot gear ringed the two former all white schools in Grenada. 83 Negro pupils, 37 elementary, marched to class under police escort as white hostility earlier in the week contrasted with orderly turnout today.
Pentagon officials estimate millions of dollars in lumber steel and cement sent to Viet Nam have been stolen damaged or ruined due to hasty unloading and lack of storage. An inventory at three depots and 13 warehouses will provide a clearer loss figure by November as RMK BRJ companies work to catalog stock and usage in Saigon Da Nang and Cam Ranh Bay.
