Two Injured In Goldsboro Train Crash At Dawn
A dawn collision nine miles south of Goldsboro derailed a locomotive and seven freight cars after a crossing crash with a truck. Two truck occupants were seriously hurt and rushed to Wayne Memorial Hospital while train crews were unharmed. Firefighting units from Mt. Olive and Goldsboro fought flames atop four rail tank cars as water was pumped from tank trucks due to no local stream. The main line was ripped up and wrecked cars lay along the right of way, with passenger and freight rerouted until repairs finish. Thousands watched the smoke as the incident drew immediate attention.

Former Mayor of Asheboro Indicted for Tax Evasion
Former Asheboro mayor P W C Lucas and president of National Chair Manufacturing were indicted by a Middle District Court grand jury on income tax evasion and attempting to defeat excess profits tax. The government says Lucas underreported incomes for 1943, 1946 and the company filed wrong returns for 1945 and 1946.
