Communists Move Toward Tibet Threat Amid War Fears
London dispatch reports two Chinese Communist armies marching toward Tibet as Peking aims to "liberate" the province. General Liu Po-Cheng with 20,000 troops and General Peng Teh-Huai with 40,000 are believed advancing from Sikang and Sining toward Jyekundo and Lhasa. Tibet’s 10,000-strong, poorly equipped forces face a daunting mountain war in Shangri-La. Britain and the United States weigh limited options, with India and France cautious about intervention.

Dawn Redwood Reborn in California Desert Yard
In Joshua Tree California Mr and Mrs Robert Fields nurture a dawn redwood Metasequoia glyptostroboides seedling under a protective cover. The plant, once widespread in ancient forests, was rediscovered in China in 1944 and seeds were sent to California in 1948 by Save the Redwoods League. The Fields follow strict care to grow a tree that could reach a foot or more in height each year and eventually spread.
