Nine NC traffic deaths raise 1971 toll to 1201
The Associated Press reports nine deaths over the weekend push North Carolina’s 1971 traffic toll to 1,201, 50 more than the same period last year. Victims include two Appalachian State University students, 20 year olds Robert Bowles and Susan Ball, killed when a tractor trailer’s trailer broke loose on US 321 near Boone. An escaped convict, Jack Moses Scott Jr., 26, was killed in a crash on US 25 near Hendersonville after allegedly stealing a car. Other victims include Howard Rea, 61, struck crossing in Whiteville. Talmdage Fletcher, 50, in Iredell County. Thomas Britton, 62, in Scotland County. R C Workman, 30, in Lincoln County. Elenora Breedlove, 56, near Oxford. and Ashley Simmons, 32, in Fayetteville.
