Veteran physician Dr. J W Slate dies at 81 after long career

Dr John William Slate 81 died unexpectedly at his 117 Brantley Circle home while playing shuffleboard. A Stokes County native, he helped found Farmers Bank and Trust Co Walnut Cove and served on the Stokes County board of commissioners 1918 1922 before moving to High Point in 1923. He leaves four sons and was active in church and Masonic orders. Funeral services are Sunday at First Baptist Church with burial in Guilford Memorial Mausoleum. Memorials may go to First Baptist Church building fund.

Two Oil Tankers Collide Off Muscat In Gulf

Two tankers Fernand Gilabert and Melika collided and caught fire off the coast of Muscat in the Gulf of Oman at midnight. British reports say casualties with several crew rescued. Fernand Gilabert weighed 10 715 tons and Melika 20 551 tons, under Liberian flag.

Faubus orders Little Rock high schools closed

Gov. Orval Faubus used new powers to close all Little Rock high schools effective Monday to block racial mixing in classes at Central High. The move follows the Supreme Court ruling that integration must continue, with potential private schools to be opened under state tuition. Henry Ratherton resigned from the school board amid the crisis.

Eisenhower Urges Khrushchev to Press Peace in Formosa Strait

President Eisenhower in a message to Soviet Premier Khrushchev urged Red China to renounce force and pursue peaceful talks. He criticized Khrushchev for one sided denunciation of U S policy and said the United States will not pull forces from the Far East.
