Wives and Children of the Dead Flown Home
Wives and children of U S service members arrive at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Alaska aboard Raven flights. Volunteers greet the evacuees with food and toys while officers handle health checks and immigration. Many children are infants or Japanese-speakers clinging to dolls as they glimpse America for the first time. Meanwhile plant quarantine officers seize and incinerate imported trees and souvenirs to prevent insect incursions from Japan.
