The battleship Missouri, returning President Truman from Rio de Janeiro, eased pace to let a Atlantic hurricane pass. She reported scattered showers and moderately rough seas with partly cloudy skies as storm advisories were issued. Once clear, the Missouri would accelerate to regain its schedule.
The state supreme court will hear arguments next week from three black convicts sentenced to death for the murder of prison guard George Bowman. The trio, convicted in Henderson County last June for first degree murder, escaped from a quarry with other prisoners, Bowman dying March 3. Recaptured within hours, their appeal joins cases from the third and eighteenth judicial districts. The court will release its first fall-term decisions next Wednesday.
William Philpot, 34, left Gilbert West Virginia after marrying his wife while using the alias William Phillips. He is escorted by North Carolina agents to Raleigh to face a minimum 18 month sentence after 14 years on the run from a prison camp. Mrs Philpot tearfully bid farewell at the county jail before departure.
Colonial Mills will start construction September 22 on a 19,200 spindle spun rayon plant in Aberdeen to employ about 400 workers. Production is slated for mid-1948 with men and women’s suitings. Colonial also runs Robbins mills in North Carolina and a finishing plant in Virginia. Aberdeen residents will build 100 housing units and town limits may be extended to include the project.
Captain of Detectives A B Good said warrants will be issued for Rudy Knipe president of the Raleigh Caps Red Cochran concession firm manager and M Moss furniture company manager over an anti lottery violation tied to a drawing at a baseball game last Monday in which a woman spectator won an electric stove.

Blair Stuart, 17, of Gastonia, pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the slaying of James T. Rhyne, 27, at a baseball park. Judge Zeb V. Nettles deferred sentence to the November term of Rowan Superior Court and will hear coroner Dr. C. G. Mack's medical testimony. The trial featured conflicting testimony over whether Stuart kicked Rhyne during a May 17 fight after a Greensboro Gastonia high school game.

Lillian Myers a 29 year Amercian Express employee was quoted as admitting the theft in a signed statement though she refused to sign at the prosecutor’s office.
A severe tropical hurricane with winds over 140 mph centers 250 miles north of Puerto Rico at 11 15 a m EST. It moves northwest at 20 mph with a possible turn northward later. Forecasts place it about 530 miles east of Palm Beach tomorrow morning with hurricane winds within 75 to 100 miles of the center and gales extending 200 miles outward. Meteorologists expect intensification as land approaches. Miami prepares to safeguard life and property despite the unknown path.
