Cobb Appeals Libel Verdict

North Carolina Supreme Court received the appeal from a Madison County jury verdict finding state Republican Chairman William E. Cobb libeled three Madison County election officials in two letters to news media. The jury awarded Zeno Ponder 40,000 and two officials token damages of 4 each. Cobb sought more time to argue, with hearing set for Oct 10 and spring term 1962.

Toll from Carla hurricane worsens as Galveston tornado hits

A predawn tornado in Galveston after Hurricane Carla leaves six dead and 60 to 70 injured as about 100 wooden homes are leveled. The storm centers inland between Austin and Waco while tides three feet high hinder rescue efforts and total losses mount across Galveston Corpus Christi Port Arthur and Port Acres.

Bus Wreck Near Fredericksburg Kills Mother and Injures Tar Heels

A Greyhound bus traveling from New York to New Orleans overturned 15 miles south of Fredericksburg Virginia. A 19-year-old mother, Elnora Harris of Huntingdon Station New York, died. About 30 people were injured including twelve from North Carolina. The driver reported a tire blowout caused loss of control. Texans Start Picking Up Pieces From Carla Toll

Texans along the battered coast began to tally damage from Hurricane Carla as winds reached 175 mph and tides up to 15 feet. Early estimates put property losses in the hundreds of millions with crop damage at about 140 million and Dow Chemical facilities in Freeport flooded.

Unemployment May Dip Below Four Million This Fall

Washington AP reports the Labor Department sees a strong chance unemployment falls under four million by October. August showed record high total nonfarm employment and payrolls yet 4,542,000 idle workers kept the rate at 6.9 percent. Manpower expert Dr. Seymour Wolfbein warns of a sticky problem but expects seasonal gains to bring unemployment toward 4.2 million this month and four million in October.
