Connor May Enter Speakership Race in North Carolina

Raleigh dispatch reports a heated contest for the 1931 North Carolina House speakership as H. G. Connor of Wilson may enter, joining Fred L. Sutton of Kingston and Willis Smith of Raleigh. Smith claims 49 pledges and aims to secure nine or ten more, while Sutton counters. The outcome hinges on rural versus industrial tax policy with Lash of Doughton and Lee backing Smith, and Sutton tied to other interests.
