Stedman Hines Dies In Shooting
BRYSON CITY NC AP A lawyer and one of two brothers he represented in a land dispute were shot dead Wednesday night. The other brother was wounded. Stedman Hines 60 of Dillsboro with Bryson City office and Tommy Wike 59 died in gunfire. John Wike 59 was hospitalized in Asheville with gunshot wounds. The Wike brothers live on adjoining property on Conleys Creek in Whittier. Swain County Sheriff’s deputies said the dispute over boundary may have sparked the shooting. No charges were filed as investigators continued. Hines formerly Guilford County attorney and served in the state House in 1961. He moved to Bryson City area in 1967 after a state income tax conviction.
