Prime Minister Nehru stated India sees no war possible with Red China over the northern frontier and would accept mediation on minor territorial issues. He emphasized the core concern is rising estrangement and anger rather than large territorial claims, with both sides accusing the other of aggression.
Asian Reds seek peace talks on India China border and Laos while showing no concession. Red China discusses border dispute in parliament as Laos rebels say they will negotiate if the royal government wants peace. Nehru cautions India China tensions may not lead to war despite seriousness.
In Yadkinville North Carolina the assault trial opens regarding an attack on a woman in her bed on the night of July 6 while her husband was away on a trip. The accuser identified as Mrs Matthews describes the incident.
Two men were found wounded within 30 miles of Trenton on Thursday. Station operator Rudolph Howard, about 50, was rushed to Le Noir Memorial Hospital in Kingston after a 9 p.m. shooting. A second man, Mills, was found near a car in a ditch with a fatal wound, and authorities said rob bery did not appear to be involved.
Tropical storm Flora slowed and weakened while moving northeast at about 15 miles an hour off Florida. Forecasters expected little formation, with Flora likely to maintain the same path and perhaps slightly accelerate over the next 12 hours.
Beatrice Cobb, publisher of the Morganton News-Herald since 1916 and longtime secretary of the North Carolina Press Association since 1922, died at Duke University Hospital at 2:20 am. She had been hospitalized with anemia complicated by infection. Cobb, a former Democratic committeewoman, was among the nation’s few female publishers and active in civic and charitable causes across the South. Her death ends a notable career in journalism and public service.

Across the nation the steel strike slows production after six months of high output. AP findings show 175,000 layoffs in steel allied industries and growing unemployment as inventories sag and firms halt operations, with Pennsylvania’s steel centers deeply affected.
Six gamblers convicted of evading 326315 in excise taxes face five year terms and 25000 fines each. Two older defendants get fines only. Judge Dale J Holder suspended prison for Buck Sumner 71 and Joey Jacobs 64. Others must decide to appeal or report for imprisonment by Sept 21.
