Nantucket Mass September 10 nine persons including five women perished when the 38 foot cabin cruiser Constance was smashed in a raging storm. China Grove Men Drown In Yadkin River
Two China Grove fishermen died when their small outboard boat capsized on the Yadkin River near Steel Bridge. Justice Wiley Rutledge Dies at 55 in York Hospital
Supreme Court Justice Wiley B. Rutledge died at York Village hospital after a cerebral hemorrhage. He had been paralyzed on the left side since Aug 27 and was 55. Rutledge, a Roosevelt appointee, moved to the high court in 1943 from the DC circuit. He lived in Asheville from 1900 to 1903 and battled tuberculosis in 1916 while teaching in Indiana.
