At Uttu Battlegrounds On Attu Slopes and Craters
The text recalls Attu Island battles with bomb craters and foxholes left on the tundra slopes. A dead Japanese soldier lies in a foxhole near Jurmin Pass from Massacre Bay, head back and clawed hand visible, a stark reminder of the fighting. Officers attempted to bury enemies in graves or in their foxholes. Snow patches dust the peaks as the slopes descend to sea cliffs, green and woodless, reminiscent of San Francisco’s Golden Gate area.

Italians Lose Sweep of Navy After Armistice
After the armistice Italy still held several battleships including the Roma, Giulio Cesare, and Andrea Doria with nine 15 inch guns on the Roma. London reports show only two heavy and nine light cruisers remained usable, while Italy’s fleet also included three aircraft carriers, 25 destroyers, and 50 to 60 submarines. The escape from German control was a notable Allied advantage, but rearming and manning the ships posed challenges for future operations.

Smoke-Filled Cities May Get Relief
Pittsburgh records the claim by University of Minnesota chemist Prof Karl Sollner that sound wave treatment can coagulate fog and smoke droplets to settle them out of the air, potentially aiding pollution control and enabling recovery of valuable materials. He notes the technique could also combat fog on land and sea and rejects sensational “death ray” ideas while suggesting wartime applications.
