Teacher Shortage Tale Exaggerated

RALEIGH September 11 Threats of a shortage of school teachers in defense areas were apparently exaggerated. Nathan Fl Yelton secretary of the State School Commission said no additional requests were made for extra teachers at todays commission meeting. Last week, additional teachers in New Hanover and Cumberland counties and in New Bern and Jacksonville were assigned, and it was thought Yelton said that more would be needed. The commission approved various supplement percentages for county and city school systems. Counties and cities were granted permission to pay supplements 25 percent above state budget figures for teachers, 50 percent above the states rate for clerical help, 3100 per member more than idle grants to school board members, and any reasonable amount for travel expenses of county superintendents.
