Market Lags at Open Then Recovers Amid Volatile Trading
The New York market opened weak with heavy liquidation pushing issues like General Motors and General Electric below June bear levels. A tentative early rally failed, sending declines of 1 to 4 points, but bears abated as the day advanced. Gains appeared in U S Steel, American Can, Loews, American Tobacco B, Union Pacific, Alaska Gas, and Home stake Mining, while American Telephone recovered after a 2-point drop. General Electric and Motors fell about a point, with a large block traded in GE. Across the list, various stocks shed 1 point or more before a late recovery, aided by optimistic notes from mercantile reviews and a federal reserve statement showing a $57.9 million rise in current circulation, contributing to a $98 million gain in two weeks amid holiday-related demand and hoarding fears.
