Kennedy halts draft of married men in favor of singles

President Kennedy ordered an immediate halt to drafting married men while enough single men are available to sustain the armed forces. The draft shift aims to keep 18 to 28 year olds in service, with a plan to defer fathers and focus on single men as the pool. Lt George Hershey, longtime Selective Service director, attended the signing and will turn 70 this week.

Committee Favors 11 Billion Tax Cut Measure

Washington AP The House Ways and Means Committee backed President Kennedy's 11 billion tax cut bill with a 15 to 10 party line vote to direct Mills to introduce the measure after over six months of work. Two minor amendments were adopted, and the bill would cut about 2 percent for individuals and about per cent for corporations, with formal approval pending its introduction.

Johnson Arrives In Norway For Three Day Visit

Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson arrived in Bodoe Norway for a three day official visit. His special plane landed five minutes ahead of schedule. Johnson stepped out under cloudy skies to be greeted by Norway's foreign minister Erling Wikbord and other officials. Several hundred waited in the chilly wind to witness the welcome ceremony. He traveled with his wife Lady Bird and daughter Lynda Bird.

Re And Son Sentenced To Six Months

NEW YORK AP A federal judge sentenced Gerardo A Re j and his son Gerard to six months imprisonment while remaining free on bail pending appeal. They were convicted July 11 with three other defendants for conspiring to violate federal securities laws in the sale of over a million unregistered shares of Swan Finch Oil Corp between 1954 and 1957. Prosecutors said the public was defrauded of more than million dollars.

Chinese Booted From Moscow Peking Train

Irate Soviet officials seized control at Naushki on the Mongolian border after the Peking Moscow Express was blocked by Chinese crew and passengers. The Soviets charged propaganda material and anti Soviet litera ture, conducted a lockout and sitdown strike, and detained travelers as customs insisted on their removal. The dispute prompted a Soviet note to the Chinese Embassy accusing Beijing of hostile propaganda and interference.

Hundreds of White Students Stay Away at West End High

In Birmingham Alabama hundreds of white pupils boycotted West End High School after two Negro girls were admitted. A crowd of segregationists gathered, police used night sticks to separate demonstrators, about 100 white students entered the building, while most stayed outside. Authorities arrested a man from the National States Rights party who refused to move. The scene echoed a football crowd with chants and pro‑integration protests surrounding the desegregation event.
