Tax Certificates Sold by City at High Point Auction
The city of High Point sold about 50,000 in 1929 tax certificates representing real estate values many times that amount at auction. Certificates sold at par were mostly bought by the city, with some by loan companies to safeguard interests. The city now seeks collection from delinquent taxpayers plus costs and interest, amid a legal contest over a prior year tax sale penalty. Of 644,297 assessed in 1929, all but 101,179 has been collected, largely from personal property not included in the sale.
