In Greensboro the NC American Legion chose Rocky Mount as the 1923 convention city after a close vote with Wilmington. The parade featured 4500 ex-service men in uniform, four bands, and all service branches. The convention will adjourn with officer elections this afternoon.
Rescue efforts for 47 entombed miners at the Argonaut mine were delayed after a bulkhead at the 3 600 foot level was breached. The setback pushes reach to the men back at least a week, though air tests yesterday offered a glimmer of hope that some may still be alive. In Tokyo, the money market shows high interest despite abundant capital, with first class industrial debentures at 9 to 10 percent and government bonds near 7 percent.
Two thousand colored veterans who fought for the Union in 1866 will hold their first national reunion at the Grand Army of the Republic encampment in Des Moines September 24 29. Opening services will be held in colored churches and G A R veterans will occupy pulpits and provide music. On Wednesday the veterans will take a motor trip about the city and be entertained at the publishing plant of I T Meredith former secretary of agriculture.
DANVILLE VA September 9 A negro man identified as Warren Meddly is a candidate for oldest living person. Investigators in News Ferry Fairfax County report his age at 117 years He was once enslaved by the late James Meddly Despite his years he remains active and visitors from Washington are noted.
Fred Taylor aged 22, the fourth victim in the Clover shooting incident, died at a Gastonia hospital. Authorities seek to arraign William C. Farris in sessions court convening Monday.

Chicago Sept 9 A motion to vacate the government's temporary restraining order against B. M. Jewell head of the railway employee department and John Scott secretary was filed in U S district court today. The action by Donald R Richburg on behalf of the railway employee department cites three allegations: the government failed to make a case the relief sought under the temporary order is prohibited by the Clayton act and relief was obtained by union misrepresentation.
The High Point chamber of commerce engages Salisbury, Lexington, Thomasville, and Greensboro to urge Southern Railway to restore trains 21 and 22 to the Goldsboro to Waynesville route. With the cancellation of trains 45 and 46, towns along the old line seek improved passenger service and permanent reinstatement of 21 and 22, even if 45 and 46 remain swapped.
The contempt hearing of Turner and Boone from Rocky Mount, cited to show cause why they should not be held in contempt for alleged injunction violations, was continued to September 15 at the defendants’ request. The hearing will be held in Wilson.
Richmond report notes James Housen aged 59, an engineer with the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad, collapsed and died here. The incident occurred on September 9, marking the sudden passing of a longtime railway man.

E G Koontz E R Henderson and Frank Briggs, Southern railway shopmen, were each sentenced to seven years in state prison at hard labor by Judge Lane after being convicted of assault and kidnapping. They abducted Sam Harris a non union worker on August 5, drove him to a remote spot, stripped him and beat him with whips. Appeal bonds were set at 38000 dollars each and notice of appeal to the supreme court was filed.
Plan under way by Amelia county citizens to erect a tobacco warehouse this season. Promoters expect 500 000 pounds of tobacco to be sold in Amelia rather than shipped elsewhere. Reports say Amelia and parts of nearby Prince Edward? Prince George and other counties have fine crop of tobacco.

Archie Nash, former deputy sheriff, in serious condition after being shot in the head last night while responding to a neighbor’s report of a burglar. George Boger had alerted Nash from his store. shots were fired as Nash returned home, with Boger suspected of firing. Sheriff Rider calls it a mistaken identity case. no charges yet.
A New York conference will seek settlement of the Connellsville coke region strike with Judge Elbert Gary of U S Steel, UMW representatives, and Labor Department officials. The 40000 strikers, nominally non union, walked out after April's call, halting many mines. A Washington report about such a meeting was dismissed as unfounded.
