Medical advances extend life expectancy across generations
Dr Jordan notes a steady drop in mortality since 1900 with infants and young adults benefiting most. Among 20 year olds in 1910 three in five lived to 65, while later generations show over two thirds of men and more than four fifths of women surviving beyond 65. Family death risks drop as parents age, and heredity plus mild overweight raise mortality. The piece cites life expectancy gains and even mentions average American uses 143 matchbooks annually.
