A drained couple, Mark and Norma Travers, struggle with gambling debts and hotel bills after a night of poker losses. Mark schemes to borrow from his mother for funds while Norma worries about money and their future, planning quick action to leave the hotel and cover groceries and lodging costs. A telegram from his mother could restore funds, but delays strain their resolve as they await a hopeful financial rescue.
North Carolina and Duke goal line drills begin as 43 Duke candidates endure conditioning. Glenn Lemon sprains an ankle while Duke veteran Fred Taylor seeks a return. North Carolina State and Davidson field 45 and 37 players respectively in limbering sessions. Wake Forest also starts with 40 hopefuls as Johnny Branch faces eligibility questions amid summer work.

William P. Brown a 93 year old Civil War veteran and former Lincoln coachman lives with his wife in Ravenna Michigan. He is believed to be the last man living who served the Lincoln family. Brown recalls his wartime service and the famed meeting when Lincoln shook his hand during a Bloomington stop.
In Lexington on Labor Day September 8 banks and the post office observed a holiday with no mail delivery on rural or city routes as numerous offices closed for the occasion.
Jarrett Blythe was elected chief of the eastern band of Cherokee Indians in western North Carolina succeeding John Tahquatte. He will lead a democratic government with a constitution like the United States and an office in the Cherokee reservation school house.

The Interstate Commerce Commission faces a rehearing on allowing Norfolk Southern to cut freight rates on select goods between Norfolk and the state. Ground breaks begin on North Carolina’s first state highway prison camp under new highway management in Marion. McDowell County forms a recorder’s court with Ed H. Dysart as recorder. Ben Thompson of Goldsboro stands trial for the murder of Pamlico lighthouse keeper John F. Peel, shot August 7.
Reidsville note Boaz Snead aged 24 died from head injuries after being struck by a baseball during a game Saturday.
Jesse Wilson was arrested in Lexington after being found hiding in a dark recess of a house. A bulldog stood nearby wagging its tail in a friendly gesture during the arrest.
United States census figures show airplane factory workers as the highest paid craftsmen. The annual wage for a plane worker is a little over $1 907, while average factory workers in other lines earn about $607. Airplane manufacturers paid their employees more than $18,800,000 during 1929.
